Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Removed Doesn’t Have to Be Painful
In most people between the ages 16 to 20, wisdom teeth (or “third molars”) may break through the gums. Since there is often not enough room in the mouth for wisdom teeth, many dental problems may occur and the wisdom teeth will need to be removed.
Getting your wisdom teeth extracted is a routine procedure, which can be performed by your dentist or by an oral surgeon.
When Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth may grow sideways, partially erupt, or may be impacted and remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. These can cause illness, pain, swelling, and stiffness, and often, the pressure from the impacted tooth may cause misalignment of healthy teeth.
It’s recommended that wisdom teeth should be extracted when the patient is younger, especially if the teeth are impacted, because there are fewer complications with extraction and patient recovery time.
The procedure for getting your wisdom teeth removed can take place under local anesthetic or under general anesthetic, depending on your preference.
