How Can I Whiten My Teeth?

January 19, 2017

If your teeth are stained and discolored, you may shy away from showing off your pearly whites with a big, toothy smile. But instead of hiding your teeth, you can take steps to whitening your teeth. In our last blog, we delved into some of the problems that can cause tooth discoloration, so today, we’re talking about solutions. Bring out your best smile, and that beautiful grin, with today’s tooth-whitening tips – as presented by Central Park Modern Dentistry, your Stapleton dentist.

Change Your Diet

If you’re constantly consuming foods and drinks that are damaging and discoloring your teeth, it’s time to make a change. As we mentioned in our last article, there are several drinks and foods that cause tooth discoloration, and to a degree you can’t avoid every food or drink that causes stains. However, you can moderate your consumption, and you can take steps to mitigate the effects of staining and damaging foods and drinks. Be mindful of sodas, coffee, tea, sugary drinks, and alcoholic beverages. If you’re looking satiate your hunger, be cognizant that sweets and citrus fruits can damage your tooth enamel. Meanwhile, other foods, like dark berries and curry, can stain your teeth.

If you want to whiten your teeth, try adding a few more fibrous fruits (they softly scrub your teeth and stimulate saliva flow), cheese (which fights cavities), strawberries (which contain malic acid, a natural tooth whitener), and nuts (which have the protein your teeth need to stay strong).

Drink More Water

Water is a crucial component of your oral health. Water is essential for building the bone in your teeth, and it maintains the health of tooth pulp (which, in turn, keeps your teeth healthy). In addition, water is essential for saliva production. Saliva keeps bacteria levels low, which mitigates the impact of plaque. Since saliva is mostly water, you’ll have to stay hydrated to keep the saliva flowing!

Quit Smoking & Chewing Tobacco

Smoking and chewing tobacco are terrible for your teeth. Tobacco products stain your teeth. What’s worse is that these products can also cause damage to teeth, gum disease, and oral cancer. So if you’re concerned about your smile, and your overall health, it’s time to kick tobacco to the curb.

Keep Your Teeth Clean

Keep up on your oral hygiene. If you neglect to brush and floss your teeth regularly, your mouth can become a cesspool of bacteria. Those bacteria will cause stinky breath, tooth staining, and damage to your teeth and gums. So brush regularly, floss often, and visit your dentist at least twice per year for a checkup and professional cleaning.

Visit A Cosmetic Dentist!

Last, but not least, you can whiten your teeth with a trip to a cosmetic dentist. These days, dentists can work wonders for your teeth. A professional teeth whitening can remove years of staining in a handful of visits. Plus, there are other options to improve your smile. If, for instance, you have cracked teeth, your dentist may be able to provide a dental veneer that aids your tooth strength while also improving the look of your smile. Or, if you have crooked teeth, orthodontic work can help to straighten your pearly whites.
